Moray is an old county in north-east Scotland with Elgin (small city -
20,000 pop.) as its capital. The county has its northern edge along the
Moray Firth coast, roughly 30 miles E-W, and at its southern-most point we
are into the foothills of the Grampian mountains with peaks of up to 2,000
feet.Moray is the centre of the scotch whisky industry with about 60%
of the world's malt whisky distilleries. Besides whisky, we are heavily
dependent on agriculture, forestry, food processing and tourism. We also
have two large military airbases which have a great influence on the local
economy.
Moray Camera Club is based in Elgin, and was founded in 1947 - we
celebrated our 50th anniversary in September 1997 with a highly successful
exhibition of prints. We have around 40 members drawn from the northern
part of the county, with experience ranging from beginners to professional
and internationally exhibited amateur. We are predominantly a slide club,
although there are interests in B&W/Colour prints, and an up-and-coming
digital imaging group. Most members use 35mm equipment with the majority
(over 80%) using Canon, however there are a few members with medium format
cameras and one mad fool has even bought an APS camera, although he can't
buy B&W or slide film for it in the UK. Despite being in one of the more
remote parts of the UK, we have been very successful over the years with
many images accepted for national and international exhibitions, and
member's work representing Scotland in UK and international competitions.
We very much hope to forge a stronger link with Krugersdorp Camera
Club, and to make this competition a regular feature of the club syllabus.
