1. PHOTOGRAPHIC ENTRIES
Entries may be done under the following sections:
Print entries are to be titled and submitted, with the entry form provided at the club, to the appropriate committee members between 19h15 and 19h30. See below for digital entries.
All work are judged by a panel according to the member's grading.
Beginners automatically enter into the 1-Star section and may then progress to the higher grades: 2-Star, 3-Star, Graduated, Honours and Masters.
Advanced workers from other clubs who join our club, may submit a panel to the committee to obtain a star grading allocation.
Each of the three judges allocate a mark out of 5. A five represents a Certificate of Merit (C.O.M.), a four a Gold award, a three a Silver award, a two a Bronze award and a one a no award. All three marks are added giving a total out of 15. The final award is then given as follows:

New members from other PSSA affiliated clubs may submit a panel of entries to the committee for grading purposes. Current members entering a new medium will be rated two levels less than their highest grading, e.g. a master slide worker will start as a graduate print worker. Members may, however, appeal to the committee if they feel uncomfortable with this ruling. The committee may also approach a member to submit a panel for reclassification purposes.
2. REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRIES
We distinguish between Colour Prints and Monochrome Prints.
Monochrome Print - A print comprising any monochrome tone plus (optionally) one colour, i.e. sepia, blue etc. Black and White and one colour.
Colour Print - Any print not falling into the Monochrome category.
The original image must have been made using any recognized photographic process/camera. Photogram techniques are also accepted.
Print Production Any recognized means of reproduction may be used.
Size of Prints
The minimum acceptable image size is 6" x 8" (152 x 203mm) and the maximum image size, including the mounting, is 16" x 20" (406 x 508mm).
Mounting Mounting of prints is optional, however, block mounted and framed prints will not be accepted for competition and exhibition. Titles may be placed on the face if the author so wishes, but this is not recommended.
The prints must bear the name and address of the author, the title of the print and an orientation mark on the reverse side of the print. Any additional information such as the author's club, date, previous awards and telephone number will assist in administrative matters when the print is at a salon or other competition.
Manipulation is an accepted part of photography. The original image must have been made by the exhibitor on a recognized camera and all modification of that original must be made by the exhibitor or under his personal direction. For the purpose of telling a true story (not manipulated), images in Nature, Wildlife, Photojournalism, Sport and Photo-Travel may not be manipulated.
These rules must be read in conjunction with the PSSA guidelines.

All entries are seen as Digital (as they are all being taken by digital cameras).
There are 2 mediums: Projected Images and Prints.
All the entries you enter, will count for your promotion to your next grade. You will only have one grading in the club and anything you enter will judged on that level and all scores will be added to your current grade score.
Number of Projected Images and Prints you may enter per club night:
You are able to enter 5 images per club night.
You are able to enter a maximum of 4 images per medium. The two mediums are Projected Images and Prints
Resubmission of entries
Often judges say "fix this" or "do that" to improve an image and then it is left at that. There was never an incentive to do what the judges suggested, until now.
You may now re-enter an image after you have done some work on it.
Prints can be redone and possibly reframed if necessary. Digital images can easily be improved.
You may also resubmit an image if you are unhappy with the award it received.
Before you start digging into your archives, there are some conditions that should be complied to:
Entries must be resubmitted within 60 days after their initial entry.
It must form part of your normal entry and not as an additional entry.
You must indicate in the Category field that it is a resubmission by adding an "r" after the normal category (e.g. pjr, pr, nr)
The new award given will then be final.
The appeal rule applies when two judges allocate the same marks and a third judge allocates two marks less or more, or when the difference between one judge and both the other judges are at least two marks, e.g. 4,4,2. The points master will inform the member when such a situation occurs.
Successful appeal: The same image may be entered as an additional entry at the next club meeting. The points allocated during this meeting will be regarded as final.
There are 10 categories in which pictures may be entered:
Portraiture - P
(People, portraits and glamour)Portraits need not be a standardized head and shoulders, although it can be that. Environmental portraits are also acceptable, provided that the environment does not compete too much for attention with the person. The main purpose of a portrait is to reveal the character or the personality of the person. The photographer must connect with the subject and extend the connection to audience. Facial expression and body language are two extremely important things in a portrait. Portraits of animals and birds may also be included.
Photojournalism - PJ(No manipulation allowed)Pictures that would be at home in a newspaper or magazine, maybe accompanying a story of an event or topical interest. To capture events in the photographer?s time, be they of national importance or local neighbourhood pictures. These photographs have one thing in common - they are moving pictures where the photographer has witnessed the moment while striking a universal theme. They are story-telling, documentary, news, press, theatre or of human interest. The Photographer may add a caption in the photograph.
Sport and Action - S
(No manipulation allowed)Sport or Action pictures are also a kind of journalistic photography where action is usually emphasized to good effect. Great sport photos/ action not only convey extraordinary physical feats, but also reveal something of the raw emotion behind them. The image should be striking and may include sport competitions and activities and crowd interaction. Newsworthiness, contemporary relevance, visual impact, information, capturing action or emotion and good technical quality are important criteria for this category.
Nature & Wildlife - N
(No manipulation allowed)Nature Scapes (no human manmade objects). Wildlife subjects may appear in the landscape. Outdoor photography seeking out beauty within our vast natural world, including aspects of botany, geology, insects and floral. Also interaction between living and nonliving things ? air, water, soil, trees, plants, waves and insects and much more that make up our greater ecological system. Wild animals in their natural environment. Photographs may contain a pictorial or a documentary value. Birds are included in this category.
Creative, Fine Art and Abstracts - K
Covering technique, experimental work or contemporary work. Stands apart from the other categories - a form of art - which has effect through form, line, texture and colour alone. Technique should be modern and stimulate the viewer. Reality may be altered. Creative photographs can convey a mood, a feeling, a beautiful arrangement of elements, and could be expressive and pleasing. The primary image must still have a photographic original.
PhotoTravel - T
(No manipulation allowed.)Travel photography should be more than mere holiday snapshots. It should present the experience of travel in a positive light, concentrating on the most picturesque aspects of travel destinations.
Manipulated Nature - M
Nature images which have been altered to show the image in the way the author experienced it or as it could have occurred in nature. The only stipulation is that all the work or additions must have been done by the author. The final image must represent natural possibility.
Landscapes - L
(No manipulation allowed)Nature scapes, wildlife scapes. The image must focus on the natural world. Anything that is part of the environment can be considered an apt subject for landscape photography
Open - O
Any subject that does not easily fit any other category this may include pets, table tops, macros, landscapes, sea scapes, city scapes ect. Can also include manipulated images from photo travel, photo journalism and sport categories that do not allow manipulated images.
Set Subject - SS
Prescribed themes are set for each club evening, in the Set Subject calendar. See our website for more details. Please support this category as it gives you a chance to expand your photographic skills, by shooting subjects that you normally wouldn't even consider. The set subject is open for interpretation and manipulation is allowed.
Definition of Manipulation Jan 2013 - PSSA
MANIPULATION shall constitute any or all of the following modifications to the original image:
- Adding an element to the image that was not contained in the original capture;- Removing an element from the image that was contained in the original capture; - Moving or repositioning an element of the image that was contained in the original capture.
In the categories Nature and Photo Journalism, manipulation is not allowed. In all other categories, there are no restrictions whatsoever in the way authors choose to post process an image. The status quo remains for the following, which enhancements is allowed, and is not seen as manipulation:
- Correction of lens distortion, chromatic aberrations, purple fringing, lens vignette and vertical/horizontal perspective adjustments;- Removal of dust spots or scratch marks from sensor or scanned images;- Due to the limitation of digital sensors regarding dynamic range, the blending of different exposures of the same scene to broaden the dynamic range. (e.g. HDR);- Focus stacking to widen the depth of field especially in Macro photography.
4. UPDATED REQUIREMENTS FOR PROMOTION (Sept 2013)
1-Star to 2-Star
Ten (10) Gold awards and attending 2 training sessions (Induction training is compulsory)
2-Star to 3-Star
A further fifteen (15) Gold awards in at least four different categories and attending 2 training sessions(Participating in a "Top 10" is compulsory)
3-Star to Graduate
A further twenty (20) Gold awards and four (4) salon acceptances.
Graduate to Honours
A further twenty five (25) Gold awards and six (6) salon acceptances.
Honours to Masters
A further thirty (30) Gold awards and nine (9) salon acceptances.
Masters to Masters–Bronze
A further forty (40) Gold awards and eighteen (18) salon acceptances.
Masters–Bronze to Masters–Silver
A further sixty (60) Gold awards and twenty seven (27) salon acceptances.
Masters-Silver to Masters–Gold
A further eighty (80) Gold awards and thirty six (36) salon acceptances.
Masters-Gold to Masters–Platinum
A further one hundred (100) Gold awards and forty five (45) salon acceptances.
Masters-Platinum to Masters-Galaxy
A further hundred and twenty (120) Gold awards and fifty four (54) salon acceptances.
SUGGESTIONS FOR GRADING IN CLUBS
All members start in the 1 Star section. To advance to the next grade i.e. 2 Star, the member must show 2 audio visual sequences demonstrating to the panel of judges that he is capable of using his equipment.
To gain promotion to the next grade i.e. 3 Star, a member must produce and show at least 2 different audiovisual sequences of a calibre suitable for entering in a Club Competition and which, according to a panel of judges, would be suitable for a public showing.
In order to move on to the 4 Star section, a member must produce and show at least 2 different audio visual sequences, one of which has won an award in a Club Competition and one that would be suitable for public showing at National level.
To advance from 4 to 5 Star, at least 2 audio visual sequences, produced by the member must be suitable for National viewing. In addition, the member must have contributed actively to the club, either in the form of articles contributed to the Club Magazine and/or given lectures and demonstrations to members of the Club at a monthly meeting.
This is the highest level of grading that can be reached within the Club. By this time, the member is expected to be ready to apply for his/her Associateship of PSSA.
ASSOCIATESHIP OF PSSA
Three audio visual sequences must be submitted comprising a minimum of 15 images per sequence, with a recommended maximum showing time of 10 minutes per sequence, supported by a tape recorded commentary and/or with or without musical accompaniment or sound effects. A successful applicant is permitted to add the letters APSSA to his name.
FELLOWSHIP OF PSSA
This is PSSA's highest award for audio visual presentations. The requirement here is an APSSA plus 4 additional audio visual sequences of the highest standard. A successful applicant is permitted to add the letters FPSSA to his/her name.
What does a potential audio visual maker need to have, apart from equipment:.
Photographic skill that rates above the average of a serious amateur photographer.
A feeling and an eye for harmony and an ear for music. Being artistically inclined is an asset.
Some know-how or recording and recording techniques.
The ability to be a severe critic, especially in criticizing his/her own work.
A lot of patience and perseverance.
An AV Series must be photographed and compiled by the author.
This document comprises the revised and proposed new set of rules to govern Audio-visuals (AVs), as
drafted by the Krugersdorp Camera Club Committee, during September 2008. These rules should be
read with its accompanying AV Adjudication Criteria, the AV Awards Table, and the AV Score Sheet.
1. AV Description
a. An AV is described as an audio visual sequence comprising of a minimum of 15 images per
sequence, with a recommended maximum showing time of around 4 minutes, supported by
sound and/or recorded commentary, with or without musical accompaniment.
a. Where possible AVs must be judged with the anonymity of the author secured. Identity of the
author to be hidden from the judges, and not be reflected on the AV.
a. The duration of AVs should preferably not exceed 4 minutes.
a. An AV should be submitted as an executable (.exe) file.
b. Size of executable (.exe) file may not exceed 500Mb.
c. If the AV cannot be presented through the club's existing equipment, the AV will be

Adjudication of AVs will be done by an adjudication panel according to the Krugersdorp
Camera Club's AV Adjudication Criteria, the AV Awards Table, and the AV Score Sheet.
AUDIO-VISUAL JUDGING CRITERIA
This document comprises the revised and proposed new set of criteria to govern the adjudication of
Audio-visuals (AVs), as drafted by the Krugersdorp Camera Club Committee, during September 2008.
NR CRITERIA DESCRIPTION
Maximum score of 35.
Quality of visuals: exposure, focus, composition
Relevance of visuals: repetition, viewpoint, variety
Maximum score of 20.
Quality of sound track, with or without a commentary
Quality of recording: well modulated, clear, well recorded, suitability
Maximum score of 25.
Relationship between sound and slides.
Effective use and understanding of AV techniques.
Titles: if used, should be effective and make use of AV techniques.
Rate of change and/or transitions should vary and be in keeping with mood.
Duration of AV: sequence should not be too long, nor should it drag.
4. Presentation/artistic interpretation
Quality of overall presentation of AV of required standard. Both the technical and artistic aspects
should be considered. The AV should have story telling value.

AV PROMOTION SCHEDULE
Promotion in grading for AVs is determined as follows, based on points scored on judging table:
1. From 1-Star to 2-Star: 155 points, with a minimum of two gold awards.
2. From 2-Star to 3-Star: a further 205 points, with a minimum of three gold awards.
3. From 3-Start to 4-Star: a further 260 points, with a minimum of three gold awards
4. From 4-Star onwards: a further minimum of four gold awards.
